Private Tuning Hands v3.0

racing slow since '03

December 7, 2003 - SCCA Slush Rd.6 @ Oakland

I was kinna worried that the track is soaking wet but by the time i ran the last group, the track was dry! it was nice seeing slonie's levin at the track, taking the fastest time in fsp to boot! there where the usual 86's 92's and other interesting cars i saw in the paddock as well as the course. the course was tight! the tightest i have ever seen in my last 3 outings. i fainally met toufbros this time. the whole gang was there too, and three of my friends was there to participate: kuya mark in his 89 civic si, yap in his 04 wrx, and chap in his 04 sti. everybody had a great time and i also somewhat improved my times. i fainally knew how to treat my azenis at the track. if you handle it below its traction limits, it will stick with you wherever you go! the problem now is to drive the tire near its traction limits consistently. ah, still a long way to go. and yes! i did check into the rv before working. 'till next chapmionship season '04! round 6

November 3, 2003 - SCCA Slush Rd.4 @ Oakland

well, another scca slush series and this time, kuya mark is running his 89 civic si. this time around, i used my azenis and ready to try to have some good lap times. fortunately, kuya mark's family and friends as well as donna is there for the event. hiro was also there, drifting his friend's 240sx! i always said to kuya mark that the best way is "slow in, fast out". and look at my driving, its horrendous! oversteering and understeering all the time. may i ask why? becasue im always too hot for every corner! thats why im sliding all over the course. (no cones hit, at least.) next time, ill try to actually do what i preach: "slow in, fast out!" on the 3rd run where blair (one of my friends) rode with me, i said to my self "to hell with fast times and lets drift!" hehehe. did some sliding action through the corners. lesson of the day: check in to the RV before working the course! i got a DNW (did not work) score becasue i didn't check in even though i was there at my workstation. round 4

October 22, 2003 - Private Event @ Buttonwillow Raceway

Too bad john cannot join me this time. but that didn't sway me into not attending the most coolest drift sessions ever! early in the practice, i was kinna frustraded becasue my car is oversteering and not doing what i want it to do. yuki needed strong amounts for weight transfer just to drift. after a couple of laps, i asked hiro, a seasoned drifter if i could ride in his green gze levin. man, hiro can't drive the track stright! he's doing dori dori on the strightaway and performing all sorts of tricks (clutch drop, feint, powerover, braking) to make his levin drift. i asked him what can cure my oversteering car.he asked me what my suspension setting are. i had mine kinna soft in the front and stiff at the rear. he said that the front should be stiff also. and it worked!!! i am so happy when i fixed my dampers' setting. (4/4 F, 7/8 R) im even doing some powerover at the off ramp exit! throughout the day, i always finish my drifts very sloppy. from a spectator's view, it would look like im too to strighten out my wheels. what i really want to do it to dori dori upon exit! i guess i have a looong way to go to do that like al and hiro. i was able to drive james' hatch. he got 8/6 kg/mm set up w/ coilovers in the front. more importantly, he got yokohama es100 + lsd. man, i swaer by those es100! it has good amounts of grip plus you drift fast AND predictable! i wish i had those in my car.but yuki was only wearing used tires. by around 4pm, i just stopped, those crappy tires aren't responding anymore. a toyota supra crashed at this event, he's alright though. at the day's end, i folloed al's caravan which is very cool! we ate at harri's ranch off of I-5 and everybody else met together at highway 152.

October 3, 2003 - SCCA Slush Rd. 3 @ Candlestick Park

Hay my first autocross event! this time it was held on candlestick park in san francisco. since this is my first event, i didn't really think about fast times so i just used my crappy tires insted of my azenis. everybody was helpfull, i guess the magic work is "im a newvbie" and everyone will answer all you questions. kuya mark and his girlfriend donna came with me. i decided to run street prepared-f novice since i see a lot of 86's running this class. at my first run, kuya mark was riding. in the slalom cones, i thought i would spin out for i entered the cones too hot. but with prior experience with track events, let alone DRIFTING, i was able to tuck my car in, barley missing the cone. through my three runs, my time became faster that the last one. i thought to myself that i was getting the hang of this. only to find out that i was like 8 seconds away from the fsp pack! that a long way to go paul...

there's the link to the results of the run. i fittingly wrote down kuya mark as my sponsor.
round 3

September 19, 2003 - Private Event @ Buttonwillow Raceway

This is my first time at buttonwillow! fortunately, my friend john was able to join me. he drives a 1989 vw golf, 8v. i was able to meet marco (all the way from washington state!), with his brown gtsr5 as well a made friends with juan from fresno. from morning till noon, we ran the east section of the track clockwise. at first, i was somewhat conservative in my drift, sliding only for a short moment. after we swithced to counter-clockwise, i was getting more angle and slidetime. its just so fun drifting the atlantic corner at near 60mph! what a blast. john too was having a serious grip time. every time i see his car on my mirrors, almost always one of his wheels is up in the air. i eventually called his car "three wheel action". i was also starting to finish off my drifts with smooth exits, no more over counter here, there, and the car everywhere! everybody was friendly at the track. at the end of the day, i have learned a lot on how to controll my car. my left foot was fainally participating during drifts. unlike my experince in DD6, i was fainally able to modulate throttle inputs + steering work while drifting.

July 5, 2003 - Drift Day 6 @ C

Drift Day finally came to San Francisco! I just made sure that I registered early because slots for these drift days sell like pancakes. I ran Bridgestone eager in the front and stock sr5 13 inch big-o tires in the rear. it my first drift event! I have never drifted really, not on the streets. So practically I have zero experience in car control while sliding. I had almost infinite runs on the j-turns which is a very nice place to start at. at the end of the day, I had considerable track time and had a feel of what the car is doing while sliding. first encounter with drifting was good but met with considerable amount of wipe outs. As you can see in the picture, I wish the weight of the car is on the other side -- oversteering!
